The eVTOL developed by CycloTech of Austria uses so-called Voith Schneider Propellers, which make it look like it has real wheels instead of rotors.
According to its inventors, rockets accelerated to several times the speed of sound in a vacuum cylinder can reduce the cost of spaceflight to a fraction of the cost. In recent years, there have been countless ideas on how to make rocket launches more economical, from reusable booster rockets to giant planes carrying space assets to the stratosphere, to futuristic space elevators. SpinLaunch has chosen a different solution, and it looks like their calculations will work.
Germany’s Volocopter and Saudi Arabia’s NEOM have also set up a joint venture for the project. For some time now, Saudi Arabia has been at the forefront of the world’s megaprojects: the Middle East country has built the world’s tallest clock tower – the world’s third tallest – the Abraj al-Bayt in Mecca, and is also building the monumental Jeddah Tower, which will be the world’s tallest building when completed, at over a kilometre tall.
The plane is still only a concept, but if it becomes a reality, 279 passengers will be able to fly from London to San Francisco without refuelling, and with zero emissions.
Embraer, Embraer’s main engine supplier, will also start experiments similar to those of Airbus, with the Brazilian manufacturer also starting scientific testing of flights using only sustainable kerosene.
The United Airlines aircraft is the first in history to use 100 per cent sustainable fuel on a commercial flight – estimated to have emitted 75 per cent less carbon dioxide into the atmosphere than kerosene.
