The air taxi is waiting for passengers on the ground, and if it is finally given permission to take off, it could redefine urban passenger transport in a way that we will no longer recognise. The technology deserves attention: start-ups for ever more efficient vehicles are proliferating, and a new NASA programme has already demonstrated their viability.
ZEVA Aero would break into the air transport market with a saucer-like vehicle to replace cars with single-seater flying capsules. ZEVA Aero’s eVTOL, Zero, is a departure from the usual aeronautical devices: it has a disc, or saucer if you like, design for more dynamic flight, which the manufacturer claims can effectively increase range by reducing drag.
Horizon Aeronautics has started developing a prototype of an eVTOL hovercraft concept. To understand how the company’s propulsion system, called Blainjett, works, we first need to understand how the turntable and the cyclic control work as the helicopter’s upper rotor rotates.
The electric vehicle, which can take off from the ground, will be developed by Orca and the maintenance processes will be improved in cooperation with AerinX. The Hungarian startup Orca, which has come closer to realising its machine, which only exists on the drawing board so far, by signing a cooperation agreement with AerinX, another Hungarian company focusing on the technological renewal of the aviation industry’s operation and maintenance processes, would revolutionise air rescue. Under this agreement, the two companies plan to jointly investigate and develop high-tech maintenance processes for air taxis.
The eVTOL developed by CycloTech of Austria uses so-called Voith Schneider Propellers, which make it look like it has real wheels instead of rotors.
In cooperation with Embraer and Wideroe, transport to remote and inaccessible areas would also be reformed with the use of electrically powered vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft in Scandinavia.
