Boeing is investing USD 450 million to help develop fully electric air taxis capable of unmanned flight and vertical take-off and landing. According to a statement from California-based Wisk Aero, the company is developing so-called sixth-generation eVTOL (electrically powered vertical take-off and landing) passenger aircraft, which would be able to fly unmanned and therefore autonomously.
SkyDrive has already demonstrated two years ago that it will soon be able to launch a safe air taxi service over Tokyo. Now they are even closer. SkyDrive has already conducted a manned test of an electric small aircraft in and outside Japan two years ago.
The Macrobat was specifically designed with African conditions in mind, but it remains to be seen whether it will ever be built. Although air taxis, like cars, bicycles and aeroplanes, will certainly become uniform in the future, the new form of transport, which is still only just beginning to spread its wings, is still quite a favourite with creative designers, who are not holding back when it comes to brainstorming: in recent years, we have seen air taxis with 18 rotors positioned like a halo above the cockpit, eVTOLs with folding wings and even something resembling a flying saucer. But the concept from South African start-up Phractyl stands out even from this diverse field.
Jet-powered ambulances, border patrols in flying cars and city workers commuting by drone – all of this may seem sci-fi today – but these ideas are part of the development plan for advanced aerial mobility (AAM), a market expected to be worth $17 billion by 2025.
Thirty companies are involved in testing the aircraft that will be essential to Paris’ traffic during the event, according to the vice-president of the Île-de-France region. Regular eVTOL passenger transport routes and infrastructure are planned to be deployed in France in time for the 2024 Paris Olympics, and preparations will start soon, according to the airport operator Group ADP.
According to the developer, eMagic One could soon play a pioneering role in revolutionising urban transport, while being much more efficient than its competitors.
