The Airbus H225 has made its first flight with one of its engines using only sustainable fuel (SAF) for the entire flight.
In essence, they would create an environmentally friendly alternative to the current fossil fuels, especially for maritime transport and aviation. This solution could be even better than hydrogen alone, but there are still some question marks.
Irish company ASL Aviation Holdings has reached an agreement with companies developing zero-emission solutions to convert ATR 72s to hydrogen-electric propulsion.
After successful tests, several Cessna models have been adapted to run on less polluting aviation fuel. Now, operators of Textron Aviation’s Cessna 172 Skyhawk and 182 Skylane models can refuel with 91- or 94-octane unleaded or 100-octane ultra-low-lead aviation gasoline.
The two companies are jointly developing a zero-emission engine, which could even be retrofitted.
The project will benefit from the achievements in fuel cells of ZeroAvia, the UK-US leader in hydrogen propulsion, and the Japanese subsidiary of Mitsubishi, the largest maintenance organisation in the CRJ family, will share its expertise in aircraft design, certification and customer support.
This shows that, not only from an environmental point of view, but also in terms of its strategic value, the microreactor could be one of the most important energy innovations of the coming period.
