Not only is the H2 Clipper completely zero emissions, but the cost is a quarter of current air transport costs. And while this is not the end of the benefits, the future of airships is still not assured, mainly because of their history.
Peter Salzmann from Austria is a base jumping enthusiast who approached BMWi, BMW’s electric propulsion subsidiary, in 2017 with the idea of an electrically powered wingsuit.
The machine’s shape means it has much lower drag, making it both cheaper and more sustainable to operate than a conventional machine of the same size.
But the design company Hermeus is still building its first unmanned combat aircraft, the first prototype of which was unveiled last week. Hermeus is planning to create the world’s fastest reusable hypersonic aircraft, intended for military use and passenger transport. The unique propulsion system of the Quarterhorse means that it will not need to be lifted into the air by a carrier aircraft, as is the case with NASA’s aircraft.
The method is relatively old, but it works well: an extensive radar system is mounted on a platform that resembles an airship, making it efficient but cheap to operate. The system, known as the High Availability Aerostat System (HAAS), has not been given too many specifications, but it is a very large device. The device, operated by the Israeli Air Force, is said to be one of the largest of its kind.
If the special means of transport become safe enough and get the necessary permits, we can get from A to B in a flying saucer-like vehicle in no time, alongside the rocket backpack, flying motorbike and flying car.
