The stage is set in Hungary, as it stands on the brink of an exciting transformation in agriculture, through the advent of drone crop protection. With licensed agents as the only remaining requirement, this shift could usher in a new era of aerial crop protection in the European Union, beginning in Budapest.
In the backdrop of this impending revolution, the European Distribution Centre for Agricultural Drones (HRP) and Chinese tech giant, DJI, hosted an insightful two-day conference in Budapest. The exclusive event aimed to prepare partners and distributors for an impending surge in the agricultural drone market.
China’s Trailblazing Influence
To the surprise of many, the drone revolution in agriculture has already begun on the other side of the world. China has leapt ahead, employing spray drones for treating over seventy million hectares of farmland. This widespread use of drones in agriculture raises the question: What can the European Union learn from China’s vast experience?

This very question took center stage at the HRP and DJI conference. The power duo of drone manufacturers, XAG and DJI, who already command a staggering 80 percent of the market share in China, are poised to shape the future of agricultural drone use in the EU.
Training and Safety: A Prerequisite for Drone Operations
While the exciting potential of drones was the talk of the town, the conference also shone a light on a more serious issue: safety. Data suggests that human error is the leading cause of most drone accidents. Although artificial intelligence can alleviate this issue, training the drones remains indispensable.
Imagine a drone capable of distinguishing a weed from a crop using machine vision to analyze footage. This level of sophistication is achievable with adequate training and the application of AI, proving to be a crucial piece of the puzzle for widespread drone implementation.
Showcasing Innovation: From Portugal to the Czech Republic
The private conference drew the attention of 70 European agricultural drone sellers and distributors from 20 different countries, providing an impressive display of the entire range of crop protection drones by DJI. A variety of specialized accessories and attachments developed specifically for agricultural tasks were also showcased.
The attendees witnessed firsthand equipment capable of delivering essential tools and supplies to specific locations swiftly and efficiently. Not to be overlooked, thanks to MyActionCam Ltd., a significant contribution to the event, participants saw a powerful industrial drone-mounted loudspeaker capable of dispersing bird swarms, adding an extra layer of crop protection. Cutting-edge multispectral drones equipped with thermal imaging also made their grand debut.
Training the Future Drone Pilots
In line with EU directives, Hungary has already commenced training drone pilots specifically for plant protection. This pioneering move indicates that, once licensed drone crop protection products are available, the country is poised to launch drone crop protection on an industrial scale.
As this exciting journey unfolds, the focus on safety, adequate training, and learning from global leaders like China will be paramount in achieving a seamless transition to drone-based agriculture.
