By 2024 or 2025, eVTOL developers expect their aircraft to be certified as airworthy and safe to fly. While there is no immediate need for new standards to kickstart operations, regulators and industry stakeholders are collaborating to define customized norms, paving the way for fit-for-purpose facilities and airspace.
Vertiport Locations: Strategic Urban Planning
Effective urban planning is essential for the development of vertiports in areas where customers find them most convenient and where they can seamlessly integrate with other transportation modes. Establishing early engagement with cities and local authorities to review master plans and forge relationships is crucial to realizing this goal.
Social Acceptance: Building Trust and Community Involvement
Despite eVTOLs producing minimal noise emissions, it’s vital to develop solutions that ensure the comfort of people living near vertiports. Engaging with local communities and promoting UAM education campaigns to explain the benefits and characteristics of this innovative transportation mode is key to fostering a win-win situation.
Sustainability: Green and Carbon-Neutral Transportation
eVTOL developers prioritize sustainability in their designs, and it’s equally important to develop carbon-neutral infrastructure. Green transport initiatives include active measures like onsite green energy generation via solar panels and passive intelligent terminal designs that utilize sunlight and wind to their advantage.
Navigating Airspace: Collaborating with Airspace Control Authorities
Developing initial Concepts of Operations with airspace control authorities, such as the FAA, ENAIRE, and AESA, is crucial to better understand potential conflicts with current flight paths and to analyze various route alternatives and approach operations for vertiports. To avoid overflying cities and urban areas, eVTOLs can follow river courses, coastlines, or main highways and railroads.
Looking Ahead: A Bright Future in the Sky
With significant progress made in recent years and ongoing collaboration between all stakeholders in UAM, the future of urban air mobility looks promising and quite literally, up in the sky.
