EHang Holdings Limited (“EHang” or the “Company”) (Nasdaq: EH), the world’s leading Urban Air Mobility (UAM) technology platform company, today announced a strategic investment totaling over US$22 million. The investors are Zhuhai Enpower Electric Co., Ltd. (“Enpower”, SZ300681), a leading Chinese provider of new energy vehicle power systems, and a strategic institutional investor from the Middle East. Both investors have agreed to a 180-day lock-up period.

Partnership with Enpower to drive innovation

The strategic investment from Enpower follows its recently announced long-term strategic partnership and technology development cooperation with EHang. This partnership aims to co-develop high-performance electric motor drive systems for EHang’s fleet of electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) aircraft.

Enpower, as a leading innovator in electric power systems for electric vehicles (EVs), is leveraging its expertise in energy efficiency, battery technology, and electric powertrains to expand into the aerial mobility sector. This collaboration represents a critical step for both companies: by combining Enpower’s advanced power technologies with EHang’s cutting-edge autonomous aerial vehicles, they are poised to address key challenges in the eVTOL industry, such as extending battery life and increasing payload capacity.

The development of high-performance electric drive systems is crucial for eVTOL aircraft. These aircraft require lightweight, efficient motors to ensure optimal energy consumption during both take-off and flight. This partnership not only enhances the efficiency of EHang’s aircraft but also reduces the overall environmental impact making strides towards the realization of sustainable urban air transport.

Uae-based investor and international growth

The investment from the United Arab Emirates (UAE)-based institutional investor further solidifies EHang’s growing international presence. The UAE has been a significant market for EHang, with a substantial order book of 100 units, of which five have already been delivered. The UAE government has expressed strong interest in integrating eVTOL technology into its ambitious plans for smart cities and next-generation infrastructure. Dubai, for example, has actively pursued becoming a global leader in smart mobility, with a focus on the integration of aerial taxis and autonomous transportation to reduce traffic congestion and enhance urban living.

The UAE investor’s involvement also highlights optimism in China’s emerging low-altitude economy a sector that includes not only passenger drones but also autonomous aerial delivery systems, emergency medical services, and aerial surveying solutions. With increasing support from local regulatory bodies, such as the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), low-altitude economy infrastructure is being developed to create an airspace ecosystem safe for widespread eVTOL usage.

This investor will use their extensive financial and business network to assist in EHang’s international expansion, particularly across other countries in the Middle East and Southeast Asia. These regions present immense opportunities, as governments are prioritizing the development of smart urban infrastructure and innovative mobility solutions.

Bolstering eHang’s financial standing for the future

This strategic investment brings EHang’s total year-to-date financing to nearly US$100 million, enhancing the company’s financial position as it embarks on its next phase of development and growth in the global UAM industry. This infusion of capital will bolster EHang’s efforts to advance its next-generation eVTOL technologies and products. Specifically, EHang plans to:

  1. Scale Production Capacity: With the additional funding, EHang aims to increase production rates for their flagship EHang 216 and upcoming models, allowing for timely delivery of pre-orders and meeting future demands.

  2. Expand Its Team: Hiring efforts will focus on strengthening engineering, R&D, and operational capabilities. Increasing the talent pool will enable EHang to develop more sophisticated autonomous flight systems and maintain its leadership in the market.

  3. Establish New Headquarters and Operation Sites: EHang plans to open new facilities to accommodate a larger workforce and establish dedicated operation centers, which will serve as command hubs for its autonomous aerial fleets. These operation centers are expected to play a pivotal role in coordinating large-scale UAM services in urban environments.

  4. Support General Corporate Activities: The funds will also be allocated towards enhancing corporate operations, allowing for effective scaling and improved customer service as EHang enters new markets.

The global urban air mobility opportunity

Urban Air Mobility is becoming a critical aspect of the future of smart cities worldwide. With rapid urbanization, cities face significant challenges in terms of congestion, pollution, and accessibility. Morgan Stanley estimates that the UAM market could be worth as much as $1.5 trillion by 2040, encompassing various applications including aerial taxis, emergency response, and logistical solutions.

EHang, as one of the pioneers in UAM, has continually demonstrated its ability to innovate. Their flagship eVTOL, the EHang 216, is designed for passenger transport and has already performed successful trial flights in several countries, including Austria, South Korea, and Norway. These trials help showcase the potential for eVTOL technology to transform urban transit by providing a fast, safe, and environmentally friendly alternative to conventional ground transportation.

Additionally, EHang’s eVTOLs are being tested for cargo deliveries, medical supply transportation, and disaster relief, making them versatile assets for urban and rural infrastructure alike. By addressing a variety of use cases, EHang aims to build a comprehensive ecosystem of aerial solutions, contributing significantly to the development of urban air infrastructure.

Comments from eHang leadership

Mr. Conor Yang, Chief Financial Officer of EHang, commented, “We are pleased to announce the strategic investment, which is a testament to the investors’ confidence in EHang’s vision, strength, and industry leadership. With this investment, we are well-positioned to capitalize on the vast opportunities in the UAM market and accelerate our development pace.”

Mr. Yang further emphasized that the involvement of strategic investors would provide significant value beyond the capital investment itself. “Support from these investors in both the upstream supply chain and downstream market development will strengthen our competitive edge.” He added that EHang would continue to push the boundaries of innovation, safety, and sustainability in order to make UAM a reality for people around the world.

Key benefits of strategic investments for urban air mobility

Strategic investments like the one EHang has secured are crucial for the development of the UAM ecosystem as a whole. These investments provide not just the financial backing needed for technological advancement, but also facilitate partnerships that bring technical, regulatory, and market-specific expertise to the table. Enpower’s collaboration, for instance, brings decades of expertise in electric propulsion a key component in making eVTOLs both economically viable and environmentally sustainable.

The investment from a UAE-based entity underscores the importance of regional partnerships. The Middle East has expressed significant interest in becoming a hub for futuristic technologies, and aerial mobility is a part of that vision. The region’s favorable regulatory environment and willingness to adopt new technologies make it an ideal testing ground for UAM.

In conclusion, EHang’s recent round of investments represents not just an influx of capital, but a strategic alignment with industry players who can support the company in various dimensions of growth from production scaling to international market expansion. The funding reinforces the company’s position as a key player in shaping the future of urban air mobility and underlines the potential of eVTOL technology to transform the way people and goods move within urban environments.
