The Bayraktar Kızılelma, a next-generation unmanned combat aerial vehicle (UCAV) developed by the Turkish defense firm Baykar, has achieved a significant milestone with the successful integration and testing of a domestically produced low-observable electro-optical targeting system (EOTS) Aselsan.
The system, known as Toygun, represents technology typically reserved for crewed fifth-generation fighter aircraft. Its adaptation onto an unmanned platform like the Kızılelma is a noted advancement in unmanned aerial combat vehicle capabilities, suggesting a tangible shift in the potential operational roles for UCAVs.
Baykar states this integration provides “significant operational advantages” and elevates Turkey’s standing in advanced aviation sectors.
Validation of sensor performance and system interoperability
Testing conducted at the Akıncı Flight Training and Test Center in Çorlu validated the Toygun EOTS’s core functionalities in operational flight conditions. Baykar reported the system demonstrated stable high-definition imaging across various altitudes and speed regimes, maintained consistent long-range tracking of moving targets, and executed high-precision laser designation.
A critical technical achievement was the system’s seamless data exchange with the Kızılelma’s central integrated computer, maintaining performance under diverse environmental conditions.
These results confirm the technical maturity required for the integration to proceed to subsequent development phases.
Simulated beyond-visual-range engagement against a 4th-generation fighter
In a pivotal test on November 20, 2025, the Kızılelma platform conducted a simulated beyond-visual-range (BVR) air-to-air engagement. Utilizing its integrated sensors and the indigenous GÖKDOĞAN air-to-air missile system, the UCAV successfully detected, tracked, and simulated an engagement sequence against a maneuvering F-16 fighter jet.
This event is notable as it represents the first demonstration where a Turkish unmanned platform simulated defeating a frontline, crewed fighter jet using a fully indigenous sensor and weapon suite.
This test critically challenges traditional paradigms of air combat, indicating a foreseeable future where UCAVs may assume roles in contested airspace that were previously the exclusive domain of manned aircraft.
Platform development and strategic context
The Bayraktar Kızılelma, Turkey’s first indigenously developed unmanned fighter aircraft, completed its maiden flight in late 2022 and is a prominent component of the nation’s expanding defense industrial portfolio Baykar. Its development follows the operational success of Baykar’s earlier platforms, such as the Bayraktar TB2, which gained international recognition in recent conflicts.
The progression from medium-altitude long-endurance (MALE) UCAVs like the TB2 to a low-observable, jet-powered unmanned fighter represents a substantial technological leap, underscoring the rapid evolution within this sector of defense aerospace.
Baykar’s export-oriented industrial model
Baykar’s development strategy, funded entirely through internal resources since its founding, has been coupled with a highly successful export-focused business model.
Since initiating UAV research and development in 2003, the company has derived a substantial majority of its revenue from exports. In both 2023 and 2024, Baykar reported export revenues of $1.8 billion, placing it among Turkey’s top exporting entities and solidifying its position as a leading global exporter of unmanned aerial systems.
The company’s export portfolio includes agreements with 37 countries for its Bayraktar TB2 and Bayraktar Akıncı platforms, demonstrating the scalability and international demand for its products Wikipedia.
