Sam Bousfield, CEO of Samson Sky, has been granted his eighth design patent from the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office and international patent offices for the Switchblade Flying Car. The newest patent, issued on November 19, 2025, covers the unique tail fold and retraction design of the flying and driving vehicle.
Key Features of the Patented Design:
- The tail fold mechanism operates seamlessly at the touch of a button from the cockpit.
- The tail and propellers retract into the vehicle’s body, fully protecting all flying surfaces while in drive mode.
- This design enhances safety on the ground and is expected to simplify the insurance process.
- Owners can park the Switchblade in any standard garage, eliminating the need for additional storage or hangar fees.
Statement from Sam Bousfield:
“We are the only flying car that can comply with this very important insurance requirement of protecting the flying surfaces while driving. We are also the only flying car with high-performance in both driving and flying modes.”
Additional Patents and Market Reach:
- More patents are currently in progress in the U.S. and internationally.
- Samson Sky has Reservation Holders in over 50 countries, including all 50 U.S. states.
- The Switchblade will be available with either left- or right-hand drive controls for international markets.
Performance and Specifications:
- First Flight: November 2023
- Hybrid-Electric Vehicle: Sports car performance, 0–60 mph (97 km/h) in 5 seconds, top speed of 125 mph (201 km/h)
- Aircraft Performance: Estimated cruise speed of 160 mph (257 km/h), range of 500 miles (805 km) at 13,000 ft on a single tank of premium auto gas
- Safety: All flying surfaces are enclosed within the vehicle while in driving mode
- Convenience: Fits in a standard garage; transforms from driving to flying mode in three minutes at the push of a button
Market and Future Plans:
- Nearly 2,700 reservations from over 50 countries, representing over $500MM USD in future revenue
- Future certified commercial Switchblades planned for an Express Courier Service, funded by accredited investors worldwide
- Estimated pricing: $200,000 USD
