Boom Supersonic’s experimental aircraft, the XB-1, has officially broken the sound barrier, marking a major advancement in supersonic aviation technology and bringing commercial supersonic travel one step closer to reality.

The historic flight

On January 28, 2025, at approximately 08:21 local time, the XB-1 took off from Mojave Air & Space Port under the command of veteran test pilot Tristan Brandenburg. This pivotal test flight aimed to demonstrate the aircraft’s ability to safely and efficiently exceed the speed of sound, a critical step in Boom Supersonic’s broader mission to develop Overture, a next-generation supersonic passenger jet.

By 08:33, the XB-1 had successfully reached a speed of Mach 1.1 at an altitude of 35,000 feet (10,668 meters), officially breaking the sound barrier. This milestone was recorded using advanced instrumentation aboard the aircraft and visually documented by a Dassault Mirage F1 escort aircraft. Additional support was provided by a Northrop T-38 Talon, ensuring accurate data collection and safety throughout the test.

Following the successful demonstration of supersonic flight capabilities, the XB-1 safely returned to Mojave Airport at 08:55, completing a flight duration of just over half an hour.

Technical advancements and significance

The XB-1, often referred to as the “Baby Boom,” is a scaled-down demonstrator designed to validate key technologies for Boom Supersonic’s upcoming commercial airliner, Overture. The aircraft features cutting-edge innovations, including:

  • Carbon fiber composite fuselage – Reducing weight while improving aerodynamic efficiency.

  • Aerodynamically optimized delta wing design – Enhancing lift-to-drag ratio for efficient high-speed flight.

  • Advanced propulsion system – Powered by three General Electric J85 turbojet engines, originally designed for supersonic military jets.

  • State-of-the-art flight control systems – Improving stability and maneuverability at transonic and supersonic speeds.

The successful supersonic test flight of the XB-1 demonstrates that these technologies can be effectively integrated into a commercial aircraft framework, reinforcing the feasibility of Boom Supersonic’s long-term vision.

Overture: The future of supersonic travel

Building on the lessons learned from the XB-1, Boom Supersonic is now focused on developing Overture, a commercial supersonic airliner designed to revolutionize air travel. With a planned seating capacity of 65 to 80 passengers, Overture aims to reduce transoceanic flight times by flying at speeds of Mach 1.7 approximately twice the speed of current commercial aircraft.

The aircraft’s projected range exceeds 7,800 kilometers (4,850 miles), making routes such as New York to London achievable in just 3.5 hours.

Key features of Overture:

  • Sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) compatibility to minimize environmental impact.

  • Boom-less supersonic design aimed at reducing disruptive sonic booms over populated areas.

  • Next-generation noise reduction technologies to meet stringent airport noise regulations.

  • Optimized passenger experience with spacious seating, panoramic windows, and luxury amenities.

Boom Supersonic anticipates Overture’s maiden flight by 2029, with commercial operations expected to commence in the early 2030s. Several airlines, including United Airlines and Japan Airlines, have already expressed interest, placing pre-orders for the aircraft.

Challenges and the road ahead

Despite this milestone, the path to commercial supersonic travel remains complex. Key challenges include:

  • Regulatory approval – Overcoming noise restrictions and securing international flight permissions.

  • Economic feasibility – Ensuring ticket prices remain competitive compared to subsonic alternatives.

  • Environmental concerns – Addressing the impact of supersonic emissions and fuel consumption.

Boom Supersonic has proactively partnered with NASA, the FAA, and leading aerospace firms to address these challenges. Advancements in sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and new aerodynamic technologies continue to shape the future of commercial supersonic travel.

The successful supersonic flight of the XB-1 represents a critical step forward in Boom Supersonic’s ambitious quest to make high-speed air travel mainstream. By demonstrating the viability of supersonic technology in a modern, sustainable framework, the company has reignited industry enthusiasm for the next era of aviation.

As Boom Supersonic progresses toward the launch of Overture, the aviation industry watches closely, anticipating a future where supersonic flight is not just a technological marvel but a commercially viable reality.
