They conducted a successful test flight with a Boeing flying car that could revolutionize aviation.
Boeing, the world’s largest airline, has announced that it has completed testing its first flying car outside of Washington DC at a small airport, CNN said. The flight lasted less than a minute, no one on board traveled and there was no specific destination, during the first test flight, the vehicle hovered over a runway. The vehicle, also called a flying car or flying taxi, was developed by the company’s Boeing NeXt division. The prototype of the aircraft is 9 meters long and 8.5 meters wide, electrically powered, with a range of 80 kilometers.
This was the first flight to test the structure with a type intended to be final. The flying taxi was not originally developed by Boeing, but was developed by the U.S. Department of Defense’s research division, DARPA, in collaboration with Aurora Flight Sciences. However, Boeing also saw fantasy in the plans, so they bought the Aurora.
Cyrus Sigari, a well-known investor in urban air carriers, organized an eVTOL (Abbreviation for Electric Devices Capable of Vertical Take-Off and Landing) conference in Bentonville last year. The investor told CNN Business that Boeing’s initiative could open the door to a new kind of production model and completely reshape transportation.
Eric Bartsch, CEO of VerdeGo Aero, a personal aircraft manufacturer, said eVTOL technology will also impact the production of electric-powered devices, including drones. We are returning to the golden age of innovation, when people try new things Bartsch said. He estimates that there could be up to 10 companies that will be able to adopt the new technology.
There is a lot of competition
There is ongoing competition between Boeing and its challengers, such as Airbus, to develop an electric aircraft capable of taking off and landing in one place. A similar concept is being worked on by Daimler’s carmaker, the Bell Company, which makes helicopters for the U.S. Army, or Uber, which is also working directly with the U.S. Army on the project, and by 2020, the first prototype would be launched. In addition, Uber also plans to introduce air taxis by 2023.
Boeing has moved from concept to working prototype in a single year, and the company believes flying cars will be able to revolutionize transport. Several Silicon Valley companies have already signed up to implement the concept: however, A3’s Vahana self-propelled flying car has already surpassed its first successful test flight last year.
Larry Page, one of Google’s founders, announced the construction of cars flying in the name of Kitty Hawk back in 2017. The device has also been tested, but it is still one of the smallest devices in terms of size. Page also began investing in 2018 in the development of a vehicle called BlackFly by a company called Opener, which currently only has one person in its cabin.
It is not yet entirely clear whether the deadlines set by companies can be met: Boeing, for example, wants to schedule sales by early 2020. In any case, a number of transport issues and regulations will also need to be clarified in order to place vehicles on the market.
