Since the beginning of the recent coronavirus resurgence in China’s Guangdong Province, EHang Holdings Limited (Nasdaq: EH) (“EHang” or the “Company”) has stepped up as a first-responder and leveraged its autonomous aerial vehicle (AAV) technology by dispatching a flight operations team and multiple AAVs for COVID-19 relief and control efforts in Guangzhou City.
It is logical to think that if in a few years or decades people will travel primarily by air rather than by road, then public transport, which carries a large part of the traffic in big cities, will be over our heads. The fact that, unlike air taxis, the development of air buses has not yet started is mainly due to technical obstacles, but the first swallows are already on the scene.
The city of Coventry, England, will start testing flying taxis and parcel delivery drones later this year. The £1.2 million project could help create the country’s first “urban airways.” The government has set up a central station from which test flights will be made to various locations in the city of 400,000 people. The task will be managed from the ground by a company called Urban-Air Port.
Wright Electric has made progress in electrifying aviation. The US company is focusing on jets, aircraft that fly less than a thousand kilometres. Such aircraft account for ninety percent of aviation emissions and mass electrification would be a major step forward.
The European aircraft manufacturer promises to introduce hydrogen as a fuel for regional aviation by 2035, but does not expect the technology to be widely adopted by mid-century.
