Unveiling the Whisper of Innovation: CycloTech’s Exploration into CycloRotor Noise Levels

  • Reading Time:4Minutes

In the fast-paced realm of aeronautical engineering, the introduction of CycloRotors has heralded a paradigm shift in propulsion technology for urban air mobility vehicles. Known for its unique 360-degree thrust vectoring capability and compactness, the CycloRotor has emerged as a tantalizing proposition for future air vehicles.

In the pursuit of advancing this technology and making it more accessible, CycloTech recently spearheaded the most comprehensive outdoor noise testing exercise ever seen within the industry, focusing solely on CycloRotors. This initiative marks a critical juncture in the evolving narrative of these novel rotor systems, revealing their acoustic footprint within the urban soundscape.

The Sound of Progress: Testing the Acoustics

Conducted at the serene Wels General Aviation Airport, nestled in Austria, this groundbreaking noise test campaign saw the CycloRotor CR42, an innovative rotor model, mounted vertically on a mobile frame, ensuring it was far removed from any reflective surfaces that could interfere with the precision of acoustic measurements. The tests were meticulously scheduled during periods of calm weather, with wind speeds below 2.5m/s, and devoid of any disruptive air traffic.

To understand the acoustic nuances of the CycloRotor, eight microphones were expertly placed in five unique configurations, meticulously designed to profile the noise generation and propagation patterns of the CycloRotor.

Silence Speaks: The Crucial Findings

Among the wealth of data procured, a standout finding was that at a distance of 100 meters, the CycloRotor produces a sound pressure level of a mere 59 dBA.

To put this in perspective, it’s akin to the gentle hum of a casual conversation between two people – an encouraging testament to its potential for urban integration.

Commenting on these findings, Pedro Carrasco Laraña, an esteemed Aeroacoustics Engineer at CycloTech, expressed optimism in their ongoing quest to fine-tune the aeroacoustic signature of the CycloRotor, stating,

“This is a promising result.”

The Promise of Electrically-Powered Silence

Noteworthy here is CycloTech’s commitment to leveraging the intrinsic noise reduction potential of electrically-powered air vehicles. As the data obtained from this testing campaign continue to inform and guide the design of CycloRotor-driven AirCar concepts, there is a clear opportunity to minimize noise exposure in densely populated areas.

However, it’s important to note that while these preliminary findings are encouraging, we are still in the early stages of understanding the comprehensive impact of this technology. CycloTech must maintain its commitment to rigorous testing and optimization to ensure the most seamless and considerate integration of these air vehicles into urban environments.

Looking Ahead…

As we move towards a future punctuated by electrically powered air vehicles, companies like CycloTech are pioneering the charge with innovative and conscientious technology. While CycloRotor’s potential as a sustainable, low-noise urban mobility solution is evident, we eagerly anticipate the day when the gentle hum of a CycloRotor becomes an ordinary part of our daily soundscape.

CycloTech: Pioneering the Skyways of Tomorrow

In the high-stakes world of aviation technology, Austria-based CycloTech GmbH has distinguished itself as a vanguard of innovative propulsion systems. As a global leader, the company has built its reputation on the back of the Voith-Schneider Principle, a groundbreaking method of propulsion that has revolutionized the industry’s approach to air mobility.

The company’s flagship innovation, the CycloRotor, offers a 360-degree thrust vectoring system. This game-changing, electrically driven propulsion system is reshaping the contours of air mobility, meeting the new demands of the 21st century and heralding a more sustainable future for aviation.

Engineering Mastery: The CycloRotor Unveiled

Imbued with a compact design, the CycloRotor offers instant control over both the magnitude and direction of its omni-directional thrust. This unique capability allows for seamless transitions from hovering to forward flight, affording unprecedented control over the air vehicle.

The CycloRotor also features a sophisticated gust control system and precision landing capabilities. These features make it ideally suited for safe operation in crowded airspaces and confined areas.

Opening the Sky: The Vision of CycloTech

Driven by a vision to make individual air mobility as commonplace as driving a car, CycloTech is committed to opening the sky for everyone. By harnessing the transformative power of its CycloRotor, the company is taking strides towards a future where the marvel of individual flight is no longer the stuff of science fiction, but a normal part of everyday life.

As we look to the horizon, the ambition and innovation displayed by CycloTech promise to propel us into an era of air mobility that is more sustainable, efficient, and accessible than ever before.
