Skyfly and AeroVolt: air mobility in the UK

In a significant leap towards sustainable regional air travel, Skyfly and AeroVolt have announced a partnership set to revolutionize the urban air mobility (UAM) landscape in the UK. This collaboration aims to launch electric Vertical Take-Off and Landing (eVTOL) flights between airfields starting in 2024, marking a critical step forward in integrating green technology with aviation infrastructure.

The Core of the Partnership

Skyfly, known for its innovative Axe eVTOL aircraft, brings to the table a design optimized for personal use and ease of operation, akin to flying a consumer-grade drone. The Axe boasts a range of 100 miles on electric power alone, extendable to 300 miles with an optional hybrid generator, and a cruise speed of 100 mph. Priced at USD 180,000, it represents an accessible entry point into personal air mobility.

AeroVolt, on the other hand, specializes in electric aircraft charging solutions. Their work includes the development of a network of charging stations accessible through a subscription service named ‘Squadron.’ This service not only facilitates the charging of electric aircraft like the Pipistrel Velis Electro but also heralds a new era of convenience and accessibility for eVTOL operators and enthusiasts.

Enhancing Operational Viability

This partnership addresses one of the most significant challenges in the UAM sector: the infrastructure for charging and maintaining electric aircraft. AeroVolt’s charging stations, capable of delivering 22kW with plans to upgrade to 44kW and eventually 120kW, are a game-changer. They ensure that vehicles like the Axe eVTOL can be charged in approximately 3.5 hours, making airfield-to-airfield flights not just possible but practical on a day-to-day basis.

A Growing Ecosystem

The collaboration between Skyfly and AeroVolt is a testament to the burgeoning ecosystem supporting urban air mobility. By focusing on the integration of vehicle technology with charging infrastructure, this partnership lays the groundwork for a future where flying from one city to another could be as simple as driving – but without the traffic jams and with a significantly reduced carbon footprint.

As the UK gears up for this pioneering venture into eVTOL flights, the Skyfly and AeroVolt partnership serves as a beacon of innovation and sustainability. It is a clear indicator that the future of urban air mobility, once the realm of science fiction, is rapidly approaching reality. With the operational viability of eVTOLs for regional connectivity being enhanced, the dream of a greener, more efficient mode of transportation is closer than ever.
