A new chapter in modern warfare may be opening with China’s drone carrier, a platform that could become the central actor in large-scale robotic combat. In Beijing, it was officially announced that the AVIC Jiutian, a massive unmanned aircraft developed by the Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC), has successfully completed its first flight.

The world’s largest flying robot is roughly the size of a business jet and is capable of carrying up to six tons of payload. Weapons and equipment can be mounted on underwing hardpoints as well as inside a large internal bomb bay.



What the Jiutian can carry

Its payload options include missiles designed to strike ground or surface targets, cruise missiles, and electronic warfare jamming pods. However, its primary mission is far more disruptive: transporting and deploying drone swarms beyond the reach of enemy air defense systems.

Drone swarms pose an extraordinary challenge even for the most advanced, multi-layered air defense systems. One reason is that these swarms are guided by AI-assisted control systems that operate independently of ground-based command. As a result, conventional electronic jamming is largely ineffective against them.

Collective intelligence in combat

These robotic units do more than fly together. They cooperate in real time, constantly sharing information about threats, redistributing tasks among themselves, and even assuming the roles of drones that have been damaged or destroyed.

Perhaps most critically, these systems are cheap and mass-producible. Defensive forces would quickly run out of expensive, slow-to-manufacture interceptor missiles when facing such attacks.

China has reportedly developed quantum-based communication links between the drones and the mothership. This connection is effectively immune to interception and extremely difficult if not impossible to jam.

The Jiutian’s long operational range could enable strikes against U.S. bases near China, putting locations such as Guam, Okinawa, and bases in the Philippines at risk.

In a hypothetical conflict involving Taiwan, drone motherships could flood the island’s airfields, ports, and command centers with strike drones. Loitering munitions launched from these platforms could also hunt artillery positions, tank formations, and assembled infantry units.


Even aircraft carriers are vulnerable

A weakness in high-value defense systems

Even U.S. aircraft carrier strike groups could be endangered. The U.S. Navy’s air defense systems are optimized to protect a limited number of high-value targets, not to counter massive swarms of low-cost robotic attackers.

Air defenses would be unable to destroy every incoming drone. A handful breaking through would be enough to cause catastrophic damage. Expensive, crewed stealth platforms are simply ill-suited to counter cheap, disposable robotic weapons deployed at scale.


China’s strategic advantage

China appears to have found a way to undermine U.S. technological superiority. By combining the mass production of civilian drones with military-grade artificial intelligence, it has begun building a low-cost robotic army.

In this new logic of warfare, expendability defeats survivability, and simplicity outperforms complexity. According to the analysis, a new era of machine-to-machine combat has begun and China intends to lead it.
