Lightweight batteries can make electric planes fly

  • 2Minutes

Swedish aircraft manufacturer Heart Aerospace is at the forefront of a transportation revolution, having secured hundreds of orders for their electric and hybrid aircraft designed for regional travel. While these aircraft may not boast an abundance of seating, they possess the potential to reshape the way we commute.

A Powerful Partnership: BAE Systems and Heart Aerospace

The key to unlocking efficient regional air travel lies in lightweight batteries for commercial electric aircraft. This belief has brought together aerospace and defence giant BAE Systems and Heart Aerospace in a groundbreaking collaboration.

Together, they aim to develop a unique battery system for the Heart ES-30 regional electric aircraft, as announced in a recent press release.

Pioneering Battery Technology: A First for eCTOL Aircraft

This innovative battery will be the first of its kind to be integrated into an electric conventional take-off and landing (eCTOL) regional aircraft. The technology promises efficient operation, zero emissions, and minimal noise during flight.

Ehtisham Siddiqui, Vice President of Controls and Avionics Solutions at BAE Systems, emphasized the company’s commitment to advancing sustainable transportation. He expressed excitement about partnering with Heart Aerospace in developing the cutting-edge battery system for their electric aircraft.

Building on Decades of Electrification Expertise

BAE Systems brings over 25 years of experience in electrifying large, heavy-duty vehicles to the collaboration. With more than 15,000 power and propulsion systems deployed worldwide, the company will continue work on this groundbreaking project at their state-of-the-art facility in Endicott, New York.

Heart Aerospace COO Sofia Graflund praised BAE Systems’ proficiency in developing heavy-duty ground-applied batteries and safety-critical control systems, making them the perfect partner for the ES-30 project. She highlighted the shared goal of taking a significant stride towards decarbonizing the aerospace industry and aviation.

The Heart ES-30 Aircraft: Performance and Range

The Heart ES-30 aircraft will be powered by four electric motors, boasting a range of approximately 200 kilometers on pure electric power and 400 kilometers with an extended reserve hybrid system. Capable of flying 600 kilometers in a single flight with 30 passengers or up to 800 kilometers with 25 passengers, this aircraft is poised to reshape regional travel and usher in a new era of sustainable aviation.
