Denmark has made a serious commitment: by 2030, only electric planes would fly domestically

  • 2Minutes

By the middle of the decade, Denmark would allow passengers to board environmentally friendly planes when travelling within the country. Denmark would green its domestic flights by 2030, meaning that by the end of the decade only zero-emission aircraft would fly within the country’s borders. This was announced by Mette Frederiksen, Prime Minister of Denmark.

According to Engadget, Fredriksen wants Danes to be able to fly on ‘green’ aircraft as early as 2025, with full greening by 2030 at the latest. The paper says this is an ambitious goal, given that electric aircraft still have relatively modest capabilities.

The biggest challenge at present is to increase their range. This would have to be achieved without increasing the weight of the aircraft, but at the same time allowing it to carry more passengers. The solution in the long term is likely to be hydrogen-fuelled aircraft. But until this is done, it is less likely that airlines will start to replace their aircraft.

The good news, however, is that NASA has recently become involved in the development of electric aircraft, which could boost the industry. And Israel’s Eviation Aircraft will soon put its own electric aircraft into production, capable of flying 814 km. True, even this is not a classic passenger vehicle.
