According to Toyota, urban transport could even take place in the airspace. Toyota sees itself not only as a car manufacturer but also as a mobility service provider, the problems of the present traffic would be remedied by the Japanese manufacturer by conquering the air.
Toyota is not satisfied with the fact that it is the world’s largest carmaker, wanting to remain a priority in the future even if it is not the four-wheelers that will be the basis of individual transport. It may be an exaggeration to say that the days of urban driving are billed for the time being, but there are many signs that the growing car traffic in cities is unsustainable in the long run. On our own skin we can experience bigger and more frequent congestion in the capital, at the same time in Budapest for many years there is a recurring theme of congestion charges, more and more bike paths, but shared vehicle use is becoming more and more popular, be it a car, scooter or bicycle. In Western Europe, it is no different, London and Rome have long been reducing congestion in the city center with a congestion charge, and Oslo is pushing back urban driving by removing parking spaces.
The trends didn’t escape Toyota’s attention either, so the carmaker has partnered with Joby Aviation, an aircraft development company that Toyota says is committed to affordable and safe flying, not incidentally a leader in the industry. Founded in 2009, the U.S. company is developing off-site electric aircraft, in which Toyota sees the means of transportation of the future, so it has invested $ 394 million in the company. In addition to the considerable amount, the Japanese company also assists the aircraft manufacturer with its experience in production, quality assurance and cost control.
Joby Aviation’s aircraft could revolutionize urban transportation in the future as their vehicle is in line with new types of mobility needs, meaning it allows fast, quiet and environmentally friendly transportation in cities. Combining the benefits of helicopters and small planes, the vehicle promises not just as a “toy” for a narrow class, as the two companies aim to achieve low-cost passenger and freight transport while protecting the environment.
